Knocking On Heavenly Mountain’s Door

CMA and MJD may be lying low right now, but a recent sign of life from chairman and MJD’s enabler-in-chief Christopher Hartnett left me feeling alarmed.

Hartnett has a Reddit account @tedhens he’s occasionally used since 27 November 2020 in attempts to defend CMA, replying to critics in an insulting and disparaging manner. He shields MJD from criticism and defends by attacking, employing small-minded ad hominem arguments. Hartnett’s crude patronizing nature is on display, at odds with a self-proclaimed spiritual ‘senior pastor’. Example:

I’ll take a longer look at his comments another time. And a deeper examination of his username deserves a dedicated post. Today I’m writing about his most recent Reddit post from February 7:

GunPorn subreddit 7 February 2021

Reading the comments tells me this collection of guns is highpriced, and the post was well-received in the ‘GunPorn’ community.

But why would Hartnett have so many guns? Is he expecting to need them? To supply to others? How far is Hartnett prepared to go to protect his “Supreme Grand Master” John Douglas?

Hartnett’s display of deadly fire power is for him another ego-boost for a self-centered narcissist absent of personal responsibility. Again he sees offense as the best defense.

In another Reddit comment attempting to defend CMA, Hartnett uses his gun interest to belittle his opponent who had happened to post a gun photo in an unrelated subreddit:

Cults subreddit 25 December 2020

Clearly the particular model of gun was not to Hartnett’s standards and he can’t resist using it as a way to win the argument by trash-talking not only the gun but by extension his opponent’s credibilty. Showing again his genuine character contrasts with his CMA persona of a man dedicated to self-development and elevating the world’s spirituality.

How do vitriolic attacks such as this affect one’s karmic balance? I hope Hartnett purchased one of MJD’s Karmic Mitigation Blessings after these fireworks, to stop anything returning to bite him in the future.

It wasn’t news to me Hartnett is a gun fan. Earlier in 2020 he followed in quick succession a large number of firearms Instagram accounts: @glockinc @coltfirearms @henry_rifles @rugersofficial and so on.

He also followed @realdonaldtrump that day. Relevant because in the following YouTube comment Hartnett reveals his politics of gun ownership was tied to voting for Trump:

TheGunCollective YouTube 14 Sep 2020

Elsewhere on YouTube, Hartnett has favorited videos such as:

He shared his policy on trespassers in 2012:

“We don’t call 911”. Instagram 18 July 2012.

So be warned, believers of MJD and members of the “community Church open to all seekers of truth, cosmic awareness and soul-realization”; arrive uninvited to the CMA chapel and you may get shot! Some ‘church’ right?

For Hartnett, the path of spiritual growth is a long and winding road until you get to knock on heaven’s door.

Hartnett’s cratering ambition is creation of a multi-million dollar global movement built around MJD, purportedly for the benefit of mankind’s global spiritual advancement. Akin to how Transcendental Meditation in the 1960s-70s was dependent on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, revered by Hartnett.

Let’s hope it doesn’t turn into the new Waco instead.

Crystal Palace

As we wait to see if CMA and MJD will ever emerge from their current disappearance I want to write about a most curious and weird part of CMA.

The so-called “Maha Crystal” sits in the center courtyard of the CMA ‘chapel’, one building in the private residential development of Heavenly Mountain, NC. maha in Sanskrit means light, lustre or great, abundant.

It’s shown prominently on the home page of :

When I first saw photos of this crystal I knew something very odd indeed was going on. Certainly one of the most visually striking parts of the whole CMA business.

The entire Heavenly Mountain estate including the chapel building were designed according to the standards of Maharishi Vastu (Vedic) Architecture which appealed to CMA’s chairman Christopher Hartnett, a longtime follower of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Transcendental Meditation. The buildings and Hartnett’s residency there predate CMA.

There is little mention of the crystal on CMA’s site but the About page tells us:

The Chapel is known throughout the world as the location of North America’s largest quartz crystal (The Maha Crystal) weighing 14,680 pounds. This world class, one of a kind crystal was installed on August 15th, 2013 and was activated on the day of the full moon, August 21st, 2013.

In 2013 Hartnett was still principally a gem tradesman and CMA was in a nascent state. He lives in a house on the same road as the chapel. I’m not sure when exactly Hartnett bought the chapel building. Back then the crystal installation must have been partly a personal vanity project to own a ridiculously large crystal in line with his gem obsession and business interest. But Hartnett had met MJD by then and there is evidence he was already associating the crystal with MJD and healing powers. More on this below.

As Hartnett’s association and enabling of MJD deepened over the following years, the building was used as the private meeting place of MJD followers. The crystal became part of CMA lore merely by its presence.

In late summer 2017, after the formalization of CMA International Foundation, the building was fully converted into the CMA chapel (their only chapel) by adorning it with copious gold paint, metatron symbols, paintings of MJD and angel statues. There are various chapel photos among my posts but I will make a dedicated post in the future. This article mainly concerns the “Maha Crystal”.

The CMA homepage photo above shows the crystal as blue but it can be lit up in different colors:

Here is the crystal in its more common unlit state, a gaudy object matching its surroundings:

The pedestal was not always so embellished. Here it’s being visited in 2015, looking far more low-key before the 2017 remodelling:

No doubt it’s a large, cumbersome object. It’s even visible in this overhead photo of the chapel; look in the center courtyard:

Crystal Vision

So what purpose does this ostentatious crystal serve for CMA? How does it advance MJD’s mission to “create profound change on the quantum ‘invisible’ level to be experienced as healing on the gross physical plane”?

Only by going back to old social media posts pre-2019 could I find any attempts to explain it. The #mahacrystal hashtag was once regularly included in their posts. Much like MJD himself, there are scant sightings of the crystal in more recent years.

These captions on CMA Instagram posts are the best references:

CMA Instagram 21 May 2017

“Visitors to our chapel love to spend time by the crystal, touching the crystal for its divine transmissions and meditate near the crystal in addition to viewing images of this divine crystal.”

CMA Instagram 11 June 2017

“Look at the crystal and experience it’s divine and transmutation and transformational energy.”

CMA Instagram 12 November 2018

“The world’s largest quartz crystal, the beautiful Maha Crystal. Transmuting negativity and transmitting blessings from her home in Heavenly Mountain, North Carolina.”

CMA devotees share their thoughts about the crystal. Facebook, December 2019.

Those claims of powers regarding energy and transmissions are well established in New Age beliefs about crystals and their ability to heal people and the world generally.

But how does all this link with MJD’s bogus teachings and his “secret knowledge” about Master Angels, Karmic Repair etc?

It doesn’t. MJD doesn’t use or promote crystals in any of his seminars or tools. To my knowledge he’s never openly talked about the Maha Crystal. I would be interested if you know different. Hartnett appropriated the Maha Crystal into CMA, giving no origin and little explanation, but still felt it OK to write “the crystal is an integral part of the Chapel of the Church of the Master Angels.”

Crystals are very rarely mentioned in CMA content or by followers. Some occasionally wear crystals and use them in meditation, as do non-CMA people of course. But it’s not a requirement in the CMA community.

Instagram post of a CMA devotee, 9 April 2017. Note hashtags and CMA pendant.

I guess if they are deep enough into CMA to actually have visited the crystal, they’re expected to take it as faith the Maha Crystal is an important part of MJD’s system or at least compatible with it. It appears visitors are encouraged to “charge” their pendants etc by holding them against the crystal, somehow increasing the power of their various purchased tools and blessings. But did no-one tell them zero power × zero power = zero power?

Visitors to CMA’s chapel in 2015 gather around the Maha Crystal, pre-gold paint and angel statues.

Does Hartnett really believe gems and crystals have powers? The bigger the crystal the better and more ‘powerful’? Or are they nothing but commodities to be bought, sold, collected and shown-off to impress visitors; the bigger the crystal the greater the ego and thrill of ownership?

It’s clearly intended to inspire awe and reverence. It sits on a podium, raising it higher than anyone approaching it or standing beside it, making it seem bigger than it is. The multicolor lighting gives it a spooky, ethereal, sentient quality. Hartnett used to be a magician and the crystal is his elaborate magician’s prop.

The crystal is a jarring showpiece devoid of divinity, purpose and power.

People susceptible to MJD’s mumbo-jumbo are also likely open to the notion that crystals and certain gemstones have special unseen powers, connected to a “divine oneness”.

Crystal Clarity

Putting aside the supposed magical capabilities of the Maha Crystal, I was able to discover the origin story Hartnett and CMA never provided. Which also uncovered some frank insights into Hartnett’s early association with MJD in 2012 before “CMA” was formalized.

Hartnett holding a far smaller “Crystal point”, 2015.

In 2008, Hartnett visited “Mother Divine”, a Transcendental Meditation campus on Heavenly Mountain. It had no association to MJD as far as I know. On display in that facility’s lobby was a large familiar-looking crystal:

Hartnett pictured with his future “Maha Crystal”, 2008. Even then the crystal was something to be touched.

The next angle shows the crystal looking far less ‘gorgeous’ ‘beautiful’ and ‘divine’. The simple wooden base is a far cry from the golden pedestal Hartnett would provide to glorify it years later.

A visitor to “Mother Divine” touches the crystal, 2009. Face hidden because not linked to CMA as far as I know.

In 2012, “Mother Divine” closed and the buildings and contents were put to auction. Hartnett was enamoured enough with this beast of a rock to purchase it. Sidenote: he also bought a second huge crystal displayed in same lobby.

Hartnett Instagram 9 August 2013. Note room is same as 2008 photo, now looking more neglected.

Variously described as a “crystal point”, “crystal generator”, “quartz crystal”, “geode” and similiar terms, I’m not sure exactly what it is and don’t know the origins prior to Mother Divine. Quartz generally is said to be “a high energy amplifier that corresponds with every astrological sign, resonates with all of the chakras, and represents the four elements in perfect balance.”

Crucially his wife Linda’s comment (made August 11th) contains hashtags #masterjohndouglas #masterangels #healingcrystal. Confirming this crystal was intended to be associated with MJD the moment it transferred to Hartnett.

More comments on the post above reveal an effort to proclaim this the “world’s biggest” and spread the boast:

Chris Hartnett Instagram comments 9 August 2013

August 12th saw the crystal temporarily in Hartnett’s garden:

On August 15th, just as CMA lore says, it was installed in the center courtyard of the building that would become CMA’s chapel:

“It is finally in place”. Hartnett proudly poses with his latest gem purchase.

I don’t have any photos of the August 21st ‘activation’, whatever that entailed. I assume that’s when it was supposed to acquire the powers CMA describe.

More Maha Crystal touching. 2017

Having found the origins of the crystal, more searching allowed me to discover the FairfieldLife discussion group where some illuminating and frank posts concerning MJD, CMA and Hartnett were made over several years. It’s a Transcendental Meditation group and deserves a post of its own. For now I’ll share this from 2017:

This post backs up exactly what I found. FF = Fairfield, Iowa. AOL = Art Of Living center. “old money veteran” = Hartnett.

One more image I want to include is an especially rare photo. Not only does it show MJD and Hartnett together but actually touching the Maha Crystal, almost like true believers:

2013. Slightly brightened for clarity.

Do I detect a glimpse of flippancy on MJD’s face? What was he thinking at this moment? “For god’s sake Chris what the hell is this thing…”?

I wonder what will happen to the “Maha Crystal”? When eventually the CMA and their chapel are no more, and property ownership is transferred to someone else likely with no CMA affiliation, what will the new owner do with the bizarre object? Keep as a curiosity, destroy it, or sell to some gem collector? And will they be aware of its past as the centerpiece of a sham church run by charlatans?

McKayla Maroney’s Secret Master John Douglas Adoration Page

Yesterday saw a large increase in visitors to my blog after being linked on Crazy Days and Nights showbiz gossip blog. I sincerely hope you enjoy the rabbit hole.

In my main McKayla article I included images from a furtive social media account run by McKayla last updated in 2019. Asking for trust, I declined to reveal the details at the time but today is the day, together with more details. Because within approximately the past week the account has been deleted. Doubtless someone within CMA, maybe McKayla herself, read my post and decided it was in their interest to remove the account from twitter. It joins various teleseminars disappearing from the Internet shortly after I wrote about them. But now it’s gone I’ll share a lot more from it.

The account shown above was @WeLuvMasterJohn on twitter and its discovery on 22nd November 2019 is something I will long remember. It was so truly baffling, even disconcerting, I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. To discover her secret trove of public MJD love was surreal. Up until that day I had seen little evidence suggesting the extent of her total devotion to MJD.

I can now finally post the full profile picture:

@WeLuvMasterJohn twitter avatar. McKayla Maroney with unknown others (circa summer-late 2018) at a CMA Elite Development Course graduation celebration or similiar event

Although I can’t now link to the twitter profile, the evidence is undeniable for its existence. By way of proof: as of today (2 January 2021) anyone Googling the account’s username can still find and open one cached tweet and two cached photos. I urge you to verify this yourself:

Part of Google’s cached search results for “WeLuvMasterJohn” (2 January 2021)

Google’s incomplete cached page for a “WeLuvMasterJohn” video tweet (see below)

Finding the account was simple. I searched twitter for “Master John Douglas” and scrolled down to find old mentions of him. I soon saw a tweet from this account. Intrigued by the account name I opened the profile and was shocked to see the profile picture included McKayla in a previously unknown photo underneath the words “We love Master John Douglas”. Shocked is an understatement as it dawned the account was run by McKayla herself: I scrolled down the profile and saw more MJD adoration in photos, videos and tweets.

I was seeing a new side of McKayla, outside gymnastics, outside whatever fame she has, beyond anything she has ever posted on her verified social media up to that point. And the level of CMA/MJD devotion expressed was unbelievable.

Only 21 tweets/retweets were on the account, spanning 22 December 2018 to 14 January 2019. Most were made on 2nd January. This was during a time when McKayla’s official twitter was deactivated. I’m only going to discuss notable tweets here.

The reasons for the creation of this account and its disuse I can only speculate. Was it abandoned following the death of McKayla’s father on 13th January 2019? Evidentially it was created to show devotion to MJD without using her verified twitter account with 188K+ followers (total at the time). It’s not a normal account anyone would typically have, let alone a 20+ year-old like McKayla. It reminded me of a juvenile fan page.

McKayla tweets link to CMA’s video

A crucial observation is the name “McKayla” didn’t appear in any tweets or the account name and bio. I assume deliberate to avoid the account showing in twitter search results for anybody who happened to search her name. McKayla or someone else in CMA had an idea to create this account but was sure to obfuscate who was behind it.

Except there was one buried occurrence of her name on the account. As I wrote before, I suspect it’s no accident it appears only within her MJD testimony tweet image, therefore not searchable or easily noticed. I post it again but now with full context of the complete tweet:

@WeLuvMasterJohn twitter 2 January 2019

McKayla says MJD cured her of a catalog of complaints: fibromyalgia (widespread pain), acne and a leaky gut. She uses the hashtag #ThankyouMasterJohn which is another way the account was potentially discoverable by anyone looking for things CMA-related.

She says in the tweet that the photo was taken in Chicago (a Midwest hotspot for CMA activity) which seems to contradict her verified twitter the summer before, when the Los Angeles-based McKayla posted the same photo with caption “stay n cool in the valley heat”:

Posting again her full testimony image:

It’s an astonishing few paragraphs. Nonetheless it accords with MJD testimonials from numerous other CMA members. This is McKayla in full evangelist mode, promoting MJD’s “miracle healings“, his CDs and products, attributing her very life to him and declaring he’ll do the same for others. Not only has MJD made her think he can “cure the incurable” but also she must “honor him and make him proud“.

I’m surprised she signed it with her full name. Whatever the purpose of this entire account, it did not receive much attention within CMA or outside. Just a handful of likes plus 3 retweets/mentions were received. Was the account abandoned due to lack of interest? Most followers and followings were known CMA people plus @churchofma themselves who retweeted her once:

By late April 2020, @churchofma twitter had unfollowed @WeLuvMasterJohn and every other account they were following.

At no point did @WeLuvMasterJohn and @McKaylaMaroney follow each other as far as I know.

A zealot yet she hides her signed endorsement of this “miracle worker” who “gives and gives so gracefully” on an insignificant twitter page where almost no-one will see it, instead of posting it to her 500K+ followers on her official twitter or 1.3million followers on Instagram. Why this covert behaviour? Could it be CMA and McKayla are afraid of people’s negative reaction upon learning MJD’s preposterous claims about “master angels” or watching the buffoonery he performs at meetings? MJD would justifiably be laughed out of town like a travelling quack of yore. His plastic “harmony devices” and placebo pendants allegedly with powers to dispel negative thoughts and control dogs would be thrown into the trash.

And remember she puts her money where her mouth is, being a graduate of MJD’s Elite Development course for $10,000+ per 4-day weekend.

Dog Tired of Master John

Two videos were tweeted by @WeLuvMasterJohn. Both previously unseen. The first is below.

When I took this screenshot in November 2019 the video had 36 views. An indication how little traction @WeLuvMasterJohn got. The last time I looked at it before deletion it had barely increased.

Here’s the full video:

McKayla (seen on right) and unidentified person on left (McKayla’s mom?) with dog. Undated video.

They are playing one of MJD’s CDs/mp3s. I don’t know which one but it’s not stated if any are intended for animal use. Being unable to follow MJD’s guidance and all.

Example CD description:

The Master Angels provided a comprehensive package of energetic, spiritual, and physical healing techniques to initiate entity release, drain negative emotions, remove stress, retrieve soul fragments, cleanse chakras, balance hormones, remove spirit cords, activate cells, remove blockages, and strengthen the grounding cord.

Perhaps the dog would get more benefit from a $149.99 Pet Repair Disc?

Product description:

Pets are often very aware with heightened senses. They are susceptible to strains on their physiology from the impulses around them such as from other animals, sounds and frequencies in cities, or even electronic equipment in buildings.

The Master Angels create an energetic matrix that disperses radiation, negative thoughts, and negative emotions from a pet’s energy fields. They work with an animal’s immune and nervous systems while balancing its hormones, emotions, and brain chemicals. This helps better care for the loving animals that we share our lives with to keep them healthy, happy, and vibrant.

Some @WeLuvMasterJohn tweets

A previously unseen Snapchat-style photo captioned “Be An Angel Day” / “my favorite day”:

I wonder why she wanted her karma repaired at 5:30 AM

Now this clandestine twitter page is gone, existing only as a relic of her belief in the charlatan Master John Douglas and his Church of Master Angels. A man who claims to commune with angels and the “Lords of Karma” to direct miracle healings for the sick and needy by waving his arms about and selling $250 “remote blessings” and “karmic repairs”.

This failed twitter account now has no part in chairman Christopher Hartnett‘s harebrained prophecy that the “natural order of this movement” is to become “a multi-billion dollar company“.
